Emergencies

EMERGENCY CARE – ph: 0411 389 826 or (07) 5596 3299

At Amazing Smiles we are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, for those who require emergency care. We will always do our best to deal with your emergency to get you out of pain and help make you more comfortable. We have a dentist available on call 24/7. The emergency dentist is highly trained and has extensive experience with accidents and trauma.

The three main emergencies we tend to deal with are

  1. painful tooth that needs root canal treatments
  2. an emergency extraction
  3. accidents/trauma

1. Root Canal Therapy- as a result from abscess and tooth decay.

Root Canal (Endodontic) Therapy involves saving an infected tooth from having to be removed. Root Canal Therapy conserves a tooth that has been damaged by decay, fracture or an abscess. The tooth can then be restored without the need for an extraction. At Amazing Smiles we never want you to lose any teeth and most of our patients don’t want this either. We will always find you the best possible treatment to help you keep your tooth.

Some indications root canal therapy may be required include:

  • Lingering tooth sensitivity to cold liquids
  • Lingering tooth sensitivity to hot liquids
  • Tooth sensitivity to sweets
  • Tooth pain to biting pressure
  • Impulsive toothache, such as that experienced while reading a book, walking or other normal daily activities
  • Constant or intermittent tooth pain
  • Severe tooth pain
  • Throbbing tooth pain
  • Tooth pain that may occur in response to atmospheric pressure changes such as when flying or scuba diving
  • Tissue swelling of the face

Root Canal Therapy can typically be deferred for a day or two with over-the-counter painkillers to reduce the immediate pain and inflammation. We do recommend that you visit us as soon as possible for treatment to avoid any aggravated problems, as the pain may also be a sign of something else.

2. Emergency Tooth Extraction

At Amazing Smiles we believe that a tooth extraction is the last resort. As an alternative to an extraction we will always recommend Root Canal Therapy if the tooth can be saved, to retain the health, function and comfort of your mouth. Even if you have significant tooth decay, there are numerous restorative treatments that we can recommend, such as porcelain crowns rather than tooth extraction.

Tooth extraction has a number of unwanted and unnecessary side effects including misaligning and spreading of the teeth that can affect the look of your smile. Missing teeth can also have a dramatic affect on your ability to chew food effectively. To avoid any risk of tooth loss, we recommend you have your teeth checked every six months.

3. Accidents and trauma

When you come and see us at Amazing Smiles we have the facility to deal with all accidents that relate to teeth and jaws. We are highly trained and are experts in dealing with complex accident and trauma cases. Our practice contain a state of the art OPG digital x-ray machine as well 3D Cone Beam CT to give our dentist the immediate and precise diagnosis we need. We cover all cases from a simple tooth that has been knocked out to jaw and gum damage.

Some of the recommendations that the dentists at Amazing Smiles have for teeth that have been accidentally knocked out is to quickly rinse it under clean cold water and place it back into the socket. Our dentist will then splint that tooth to other adjacent teeth. The dentist will also remove the nerve and place an antibiotic medication into the nerve chamber.

If you’ve not visited us before and you find yourself in pain and need an emergency dentist, we can still help. Call Amazing Smiles on (07) 5596 3299 or M: 0411 389 826 for a consultation.
